Our Work

All our work is made from untreated wood to ensure it's always safe to use around food. Generally it's either recycled timber or on the odd occasion we might find some nice drift wood. Our preference is for native wood which we generally obtain from demolition timber or sometimes dismantled furniture. We mostly work with Rimu but also Matai, Totara or Kauri plus a small selection of exotics. Those made from native timbers are more expensive as the timber is getting harder to source though we always try to have enough to keep us going for the next year or two.We are always on the lookout for unwanted native timber. If you chance across any, please reach out to us, I'm sure we can strike a deal of mutual benefit
After the wood is cut it is then shaped and sanded to a smooth finish before being sealed to protect against spills etc. We prefer to seal with Danish oil, it's food safe and leaves a smooth dry finish. Then we finish with our own Bees Knees polish which we carefully create by blending bees wax with mineral oil. We do not use any stains, preferring to leave the wood as natural as possible. We may however occasionally fill holes or cracks recognising that in it's previous life the wood may have contained nails or screws which we needed to remove. Consequently the wood may change colour slightly with use over time depending on what it comes into contact with. But with a modicum of care you can easily freshen it up again and extend its life span. For best care and to ensure a long life of your purchase we recommend you periodically apply some Bees Knees (see below)
